Gao Tingyu of China won the gold medal in the men’s 500-meter speed skating race at the Beijing Winter Olympic Games on February 12. Gao broke the Olympic record in 34.32 seconds and became the first Chinese male speed skater to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympic Games.It was the first gold medal for China in this event and the fourth gold medal for the Chinese delegation in this Winter Olympics.Cha Min-kyu of South Korea took silver in 34.39 seconds, while Japan’s Shigehiro Mori took bronze in 34.49 seconds.There are 15 groups in the 500-meter race. Gao tingyu was placed in group 7, with Poland’s Jurek.Gao gave full play to his fast acceleration and clocked 9.42 seconds in the first 100 meters.Gao maintained high speed during the rest of the slide and slowed slightly as he entered the corner.But Gao maintained his speed in the final stretch, finishing in 34.32 seconds, breaking an Olympic record.It is worth mentioning that Gao Tingyu was also the flag bearer of the Chinese delegation in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
