Feng Youlan believes that Zen is the philosophy of silence, which is not in accordance with the original meaning of Zen
Zen is the wisdom of personal testimony.Zen is about wisdom. Zen is alive and needs to be spoken out. It is not silent.Zen often talk about “no language”, “incredible”, is “silent nature”, in terms of “emptiness”.However, a truly enlightened person is full of life, he is not negative but positive, and more positive than the ordinary positive, he is not retreating into the void, but should be free, free into the world. This is the real Zen!S article | fu-chun peng about the “zen”, I have asked our classmate, in front of the “zen” how translated into English, “zen” Sanskrit what said.I also want to ask if you have read Mr. Feng Youlan’s A Brief History of Chinese Philosophy. How does he prescribe Zen?As I’m sure you know, he says Zen is the philosophy of silence.Mr. Feng Youlan is a master in the study of the history of Chinese philosophy, but this sentence is wrong. If there really is a personal experience of Zen, zen is not a philosophy of silence.I can say in advance that Zen is the wisdom of personal testimony.Zen is about wisdom. This is the real Zen!So there are a lot of misconceptions about Zen.First, is Zen a religion? In general, Zen is a religion.Zen is a school of Buddhism. In Chinese history, there were many schools of Buddhism, such as Tiantai, Only knowledge, Huayan, and zen.Zen later merged with pure land, and now it is both zen and pure practice, and now it is combined with secret practice, especially in Taiwan. Then there is Southern Buddhism, which talks about contemplation, which is also related to Zen.We can say that Zen is to worship Sakyamuni as Buddha, but some Buddha is not called Buddha, it is deified. Some still have three buddhas, some still have the Buddha. But notice that true Zen is a godless religion.Even if everyone believes in Buddhism, they should clearly realize that Buddhism is enlightenment.Sakyamuni was an enlightened one.Under the bodhi tree for seven seven forty-nine days, Sakyamuni realized that everything is buddha-nature.He realized the dharma reality of the world, the emptiness of reality. He did not realize the existence of a god.We must not regard Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as “gods”.In this sense, Zen is no ordinary religion. We speak of right faith, right view and right perception, but it definitely does not believe in the existence of a God or Allah like Christianity and Islam, it believes in truth!Notice that we say that Zen or Buddhism is a religion, but it’s not just any religion, it’s godless religion. In this sense, Einstein was a great believer in Buddhism. And I personally think that in a Christian world in the West, after a “God is dead” era, Zen can do a lot.Such a godless religion can be regarded as the true faith of the people. We can realize the truth of man and the world without god! That’s the first point. Is Zen a religion? We can say that faith is religion. But it’s godless, it’s not divine, it’s not normal religion.Second, is Zen a philosophy? As I said, Mr. Feng Youlan believes that Zen is the philosophy of silence, which is not in line with the original meaning of Zen.As we all know, general philosophy is about logic, concept, judgment, reasoning, while Zen is the realization of the moment, it does not need logic, does not need reasoning. Moreover, the unborn and unquenchable nibbana, as evidenced by Zen, is by nature eternal. It is not silent in the ordinary sense, inscrutable, ineffable, it is not.I’ll talk a little bit more about that later. In this sense, Zen is not a philosophy in the ordinary sense.Third, is Zen art? Some people say that Zen is an art of living. That, too, is wrong.Art has to do with craftsmanship.Zen teaches us more than ordinary skills.Of course, we remember that the Japanese way of life, including their gardens, flower arrangements and tea ceremonies, is full of Zen flavor, and there is something simple about it that reflects a kind of poetry, an imagination, a romance.Zen can bring us these things, but “Zen” brings people not only skills, but also the road. The road is above art, the way is above art.If we understand “Zen” as art, I think it is demeaning. The author is a professor of philosophy at Wuhan University.
