The OnePlus 10Pro review: Putting Samsung and Apple in the dust

OnePlus traditionally releases two big releases each year, one in the spring and one in the fall, but last year it skipped the fall release, so we didn’t get the usual “T” model of upgraded specs. The reason is that OnePlus itself is changing, integrating more closely with handset maker OPP0, and now, after a long wait, the first flagship phone under this new closer partnership is here, and it looks amazing! That’s the OnePlus 10 Pro: a large, 6.7-inch flagship phone with a new look that may take some camera inspiration from the Galaxy S21 line, but more than just what’s on the surface. The phone sticks to the basics of OnePlus, makes the brand great, the software is clean, feels incredibly lively, is probably the fastest fingerprint scanner in the industry, has a top-of-the-line processor, and charges so fast it puts Samsung and Apple phones in the dust.I prefer the OnePlus 10 Pro’s design because it’s not as wide as other big-screen phones, and it’s definitely easy to hold even if your palm isn’t the size of an NBA player’s.It’s also not too heavy, especially compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max.In short, it’s a tall, narrow phablet, still big, but within reason. That leaves the 2022 flagship: no headphone jack, no microSD card slot, Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and back, aluminum frame, and a USB-C port on the bottom. You can quickly switch between silent, vibrate and ring modes, and IP68 water and dust protection is also available.A display phone is something you use for hours every day, so having great display quality is an absolute necessity.Thankfully, the OnePlus 10 Pro has a gorgeous 6.7-inch OLED display that automatically adjusts the refresh rate from 1Hz all the way to 120Hz for smooth scrolling.Maximum brightness is an excellent 1300 nits (but in case you were wondering, the Galaxy S22 Ultra should come with a 1750 nits screen), including HDR support. It’s a bit odd that while the maximum resolution is 1440 x 3216 pixels, the phone defaults to 1080p, apparently for power-saving reasons, but that can be fixed by clicking the button in Settings.Next, for biometrics, the OnePlus 10 Pro has an optical fingerprint scanner underneath the screen that’s just as fast as those in-screen fingerprint readers! It was accurate, almost instantaneous, and truly impressive. The OnePlus 10 Pro is much faster than the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner used on Samsung’s Galaxy S line, and Samsung’s solution is dull by comparison. The front-facing camera also does face recognition and works faster than you’d expect, almost instantaneously. With the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, the OnePlus 10 Pro is as powerful as a flagship Android phone from 2022.Unlike rival Samsung, which uses different processors depending on the market, it’s great that you can use the Snapdragon processor everywhere on your OnePlus phone.Looking at the benchmark scores below, running them in high performance mode, the OnePlus 10 Pro has surpassed Samsung and Google, but still trails Apple. In GPU benchmarks we were worried about seeing the phone overheat and it did get hot, but so far we haven’t seen any really serious overheating issues. In the 20-minute Widlife Extreme stress test, the phone throttled even more significantly after 10 minutes.Camera Yes, the iPhone may be the phone that sets trends in camera design, but the camera system on the OnePlus 10 Pro, with its square and four circles, does look a bit like a kitchen gadget. Not only that, but the camera module is integrated into the frame of the phone, just like the Galaxy S21 Ultra. We don’t mind, though, that the OnePlus may not have a super-original design, but it has its own impact on trends, and what really matters is whether this camera can finally bring the OnePlus phone into the big league.Plus, when it comes to shooting video, the OnePlus 10 Pro offers a range of resolutions and options: 8K video, 4K 120fps, and AI video.Battery life The OnePlus 10 Pro comes with a huge 5000mAh battery, an improvement over the 4500mAh battery found on the 9 Pro, and the same battery height as the S21 Ultra/S22 Ultra models. Here are the battery life results. We set every phone to the same level of brightness to put them all on an even playing field, and the results were solid, with the OnePlus 10 Pro handily beating the competition in 10 hours and 47 minutes, even better than the iPhone 13 Pro Max.Charging speed, its 80W charging speed, from 0% to 50% in about 11 minutes, fully charged in less than half an hour.Ultimately, the OnePlus 10 Pro is a step forward, but not a giant leap forward. We certainly want more in the camera department, and while there have been some nice improvements, such as 4K and 8K video recording, stability still isn’t anywhere near the best, and there’s room for improvement in color science.Overall, there’s a lot to like about the OnePlus 10 Pro, such as the design, display, battery life and charging speed, and perhaps most importantly for gamers, the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. In terms of overall quality, the OnePlus 10 Pro puts Samsung and Apple in the dust.
